It took a couple of minutes for what she had read to register fully. Then Martha was struck by a series of emotions. Relief came first. She remembered how scared sheâd been that Rose would spurn her approach. Instead she wanted to meet her. She felt exhilarated, thrilled that sheâd finally get to hear something about her other family. And she felt sad. I want you to understand that I would never have chosen to give you away. Martha couldnât imagine a more poignant line. She tried to picture what it must have been like for a seventeen-year-old American to be wrenched from her home and sent to a bleak institution in the west of Ireland. It was true: other peopleâs experiences might affect you, but nothing tore at the heart like your own story.
As she sat on the step, she realised that something was bothering her. Something struck her as not quite right, only she couldnât put her finger on it.
If the letter prompted a jumble of sensations, Roseâs photograph hit Martha like a jab to the stomach. She saw why Winnie Lafferty had mistaken Evanne for her grandmother. The intense blue eyes, the twists of brown hair, the wide smile: they were as familiar to Martha as her own face. The second photo was a family shot: an older Rose with a man who must be Mitch and two others she recognised as Brooke and Bobby. Now she saw some similarity between herself and her sister. She wouldnât claim the resemblance was overpowering. If anything, her half-brother and -sister, with their thin noses, cautious smiles and wheat-coloured hair, took after their father. It occurred to her that she must take after her own birth father, Mr Diagonal Line.
